We are currently looking for a motivated Inspection and Quality Model Technician: in this role you will be responsible of inspecting metal and Additive Manufacturing parts for our wind tunnel models, using 3D scanning and metrological methods to ensure they meet our high standards of quality. 

In addition, you will assist in assembling and maintaining our scale models, including building models from scratch when necessary, and also applying and developing our quality control practices for our scale models and their subcomponents. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

All the responsibilities we'll trust you with:

  • To provide an effective quality control & inspection service to the Model Shop & Additive Manufacturing departments, ensuring that component quality issues are identified, understood, and addressed;

    To perform scanning and dimension inspection of components, assemblies and complete models acting autonomously, but also based on specific requests from the Head of Model Shop and Model Shop Group Leaders;

    To provide scanning & metrology support to the assembly of the models using the available technology to ensure tolerances are met;

    To suggest, investigate & help develop new methods, techniques & systems to improve quality and process efficiency;

    To report faults/non-conformance and advising on resolutions;

    If requested, mentor model shop staff in tools & processes relating to quality control & measurement.

  • Work with the Model Shop, Designers & Aero’s to develop our scale models and working practices & tools to assist in the development of our F1 car;

    To perform duties to support the day-to-day model making process as needed, under the instruction of the Head of Model shop or their representatives. Time split between inspection/quality control/model build, and other model shop duties, is expected to be roughly 80:20;

    To develop tools & methods to ensure consistent ‘right first time’ production practices.

  • To interrogate CAD assemblies;

    To read engineering drawings to a high level;

  • To ensure that all tasks are carried out to agreed standards within predefined deadlines;

    To work in a professional manner at all times regardless of the task set and be pro-active in promoting a positive image for the department / team/ sponsors;

    Good communication skills and competency when working, paired with a can-do attitude and team work;

    To provide an enthusiastic and dynamic approach to working in our busy shop.

  • Automotive and engineering experience ideally in F1;
  • Strong, broad understanding of working in a technical team with high standards and to tight deadlines;
  • Ability to scope all tasks thoroughly;
  • Familiarity with Leica or similar hardware & software, including generation of automated inspection programmes;
  • Familiarity with measurement arms;
  • Familiarity with software packages for scanning, measurement & inspection, such as Polyworks or Geomagic, or from hardware suppliers such as Leica or Creaform;
  • Familiarity with pressure tap checking, management and reporting;
  • Competence & familiarity with IT in a Windows environment – Excel, Word, Outlook;
  • Familiarity of model mechanical assemblies and the basic principles of automation in the context of wind tunnel model technology – e.g. sensors, motors, feedback;
  • Initiative and Innovation;
  • Ability to suggest & implement improvements to the construction of the models and to our processes;
  • Ability to keep records and adhere to instruction;
  • Proactive awareness of Health and Safety requirements;
  • Willing to help throughout the department and able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Work well under pressure to meet time critical deadlines.
