Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is a national and international centre of excellence and there is an opportunity in Paediatric Cardiology for a highly motivated, communicative team player with excellent interpersonal skills to support the paediatric echocardiography department in clinical duties and research.

 

The post holder will be exposed to a full range of congenital and acquired cardiac anomalies and the opportunity to train in congenital heart disease echocardiography, 3D reconstruction, functional analysis and stress echocardiography.

Main duties of the job

It is both a clinical and research job, where clinical echocardiographic duties will be outlined below and the research part will consist in scanning patients following specific protocols for diverse research projects involving other disciplines, as detailed below.

 

Clinical echocardiographic duties:

1.       To independently carry out complex specialised investigations and interpretations of paediatric transthoracic, 3D, and tissue Doppler echocardiograms, guided by departmental protocols.

2.       To produce and authorise an accurate, factual and clinical report for each study, which will guide the clinician on the management of the patient.

3.       To participate in Advanced echocardiography clinics.

4.       To run under supervision stress echocardiographic clinic.

5.       2. To actively participate in the department’s Quality Assurance Programme.

6.       To have in-depth specialist knowledge to advise when transthoracic echocardiography is insufficient to answer the clinical question, and proactively suggest alternative/additional investigations.

7.       To adapt cardiac ultrasound techniques as necessary to suit the need of the child whilst ensuring optimum imaging is maintained at all times, arranging sedation for echocardiograms when needed.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential criteria
  • Primary medical qualification – MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or MRCPCH
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree – MSc, MPhil related discipline
  • Full GMC registration

Exprience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Broad clinical experience in Paediatric cardiology
  • Understanding the principles of clinical governance
  • Experience in echocardiography in congenital heart disease

  • Experience of teaching and presenting
  • Experience in research and publication in international journals
