Job summary

We are looking to recruit friendly and enthusiastic Staff Nurses with excellent communication skills to work on the Acute Assessment Unit, Emergency Ambulatory care Unit (EACU)

You will have the opportunity to rotate between the 2 areas and your role will involve assessment and provision of nursing care for patients from all specialities. This role will provide variety and allow you to develop skills to care for both medical and surgical patients having a wide range of procedures.

You will be joining a committed team who are constantly striving to improve the acute care experience for all patients and their relatives. We work closely with all teams associated with emergency admissions and admission avoidance.

We are looking for someone that is forward thinking, well organized with a positive attitude towards flexibility and change. We work on a system of internal rotation of shifts including weekends and night duty. We are strongly committed to the development of all our team and will support you in your continued personal and professional development with the guidance of our dedicated Practice Educator.

We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.

Main duties of the job

  • Provides effective, safe, evidence based patient care in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct.
  • To ensure optimum standards of care for all patients.
  • Undertake planning, implementation, evaluation and re-evaluation of individual programmes of care, taking into account the patient's dignity, religious and cultural needs under supervision.
  • Actively participates and monitors the promotion of education for patients, their relatives and colleagues and ensures these needs are met within available resources.
  • To develop into expanded roles of wound care, venepuncture and defibrillation and maintain competency in these roles.
  • To ensure that the delivery of all nursing care complies with departmental, NMC and Trust policies, protocols, procedures and guidelines.
  • Be accountable for own professional judgements, actions and omissions.
  • Regularly handle heavy patients/objects adhering to Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
  • Ensure appropriate standards are met when being exposed to hazardous/biological substances.
  • Ensures provision of all drugs as prescribed in accordance with UHSussex policies.
  • Processes patient property and valuables in accordance with UHSussex policy.

    Job responsibilities

  • To ensure all communication is timely, accurate, honest and effective and is managed with discretion.
  • To report clearly and concisely, written, verbal and computer-entered relevant information regarding the care and well-being of patients, including participation in handovers of patients care.
  • Liaises with the ward manager, senior nurse and colleagues regarding any issues/areas of concern.
  • To establish and maintain effective communications with all members of the public, including challenging behaviour, learning disability or persons with additional needs and bereavement.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and collaborative working with the multi-disciplinary team including but not limited to the clinical site team, integrated discharge team and acute floor pharmacists.
  • To provide patients and carers with relevant written and verbal care advice.
  • Provides accurate and contemporaneous documentation of patient care in accordance with and national policies.
  • Makes and receives telephone calls with due courtesy, effectively imparting and recording information taking into account confidentiality, Caldicott and Data Protection.
  • Handles complaints and plaudits in a professional manner and in accordance with Trust policy.
