Salary: Unqualified Teacher Scale 6 (up to £35, with the Inner London Allowance)

Location: Tower Hamlets Sensory Support Service, Bethnal Green Road, London E2 6AB

Hours per week: 32.5 term time

Type of Contract: Permanent

The team for Vision Impairment (VI) is made up of Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired, a sensory support assistant – Braille Instructor post and our Habilitation Specialist. The team works with children, their families, early year’s settings, schools (mainstream and special) and college. The team are part of the wider Sensory Support Service which Ofsted/CQC (Local Area Inspection) described as a service that is highly regarded and valued by parents and education providers .

We work in close partnership with other specialist teams in the borough and with our partners in the health service. The VI team provides advice and support to visually impaired children and young people aged 0 – 25 to promote their access to learning, independence, inclusion, empowerment, progress and raising of attainment.

We are expanding our team and we are looking for another sensory support assistant - Braille Instructor to join us and help us effectively meet our local service delivery needs. This additional post is being offered as a full-time post and ideally, we are looking to recruit to this vacancy early in the Autumn Term -24

We are looking for a skilled and experienced teaching assistant who has a recognised Braille qualification, for example UEB Online or the RNIB Certificate in Contracted Unified English Braille (UEB), and prior experience of successfully supporting VI children and young people in a learning environment where Braille and pre-Braille was being used. A familiarity with working in a diverse multi-cultural environment would be an advantage, as would the ability to offer an additional community language as well as Braille.

The ideal candidate would have experience of work across a diverse age range, including very young babies and pre-school children. You may have a wider knowledge of special educational needs and will show a commitment to supporting successful inclusion. You will also appreciate the importance of teamwork within a peripatetic service and be able to show evidence of supporting colleagues.

This is a peripatetic role. You will be expected to work in a variety of different locations across the borough. A travel allowance is also offered with this post.
