Senior Research Software Engineer

The Role

The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a national Research Centre, funded by the UK government through UK Research and Innovation, dedicated to bringing about transformative changes in life science through interdisciplinary research and technology. The scientific focus is to look at the impact of virus on the body, expanding from the structural models of proteins to observing changes in tissues.

The Rosalind Franklin Institute is currently expanding and looking to recruit Senior Research Software Engineers (RSE) for its Artificial Intelligence and Informatics Theme. RSE is a protected title with its own institute, find more on the definition of the role here . A successful candidate will be working 50% as part of the Core team who maintain institute wide Data and Compute infrastructure as well as working 50% collaboratively with our research project teams, to provide expert advice and assistance as they tackle challenging problems across the scientific disciplines at the Franklin.

The Franklin faces unique technology challenges as it processes multi-terabytes of data per day with a variety of complex scientific software, often on high performance computing resources. The AI Core Team have built and are constantly improving the cloud-based data and compute infrastructure which allows for scientists to process their workflows from taking data on instruments to disseminating data via publication. As a senior RSE you will be working on developing this infrastructure to move towards the Franklin’s scientific goals. You will be working in adapting our workloads to cutting edge technology as well as designing and developing software to meet research needs.

Responsibilities

The Artificial Intelligence and Informatics group currently has the following responsibilities, as a member of the team your role would be to support one or more of the following technologies involved with our infrastructure.

Collaborate on projects with other groups to develop scientific software such as web applications, APIs, Machine Learning, Image processing.

 Writing and deploying your scientific software making the best use of our existing cloud/HPC/data infrastructure.

Good software development practices such as CI/CD, writing tests and installers.

Requirements gathering.

Collaboration with software support groups in STFC Scientific Computing Department and The Rosalind Franklin Institute to facilitate software teams working on specific Franklin projects.

Create and maintain a comprehensive and up to date best practice documentation for all members of the Franklin.

Attend scientific seminars and meetings to keep up to date with developments in software and methodology.

Manage and develop projects for Graduate and Student placements associated with the Franklin.

Line Management of RSEs and RSAs

Disseminate results through writing papers and presenting at scientific meetings.

Contribute to the public engagement in science programme of the Franklin.

Support core team in development and maintenance of compute and data infrastructure.

User support and service management ( training, writing documentation, support)
