The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Health and Safety Project Specialist who will provide general and specialist health and safety advice. Working with PD/PMs, the role holder will lead Arup’s internal H&S support service, influencing how H&S is integrated, resourced and governed throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities of the role include: 

  • Engage with the opportunities and bid teams to ensure the need for specialist H&S support and expertise is appropriately considered within opportunities and bidding, project inception and delivery management.
  • In collaboration with the opportunities and bid teams, establishing and managing processes to adequately resource current and future demand. This will entail establishing tiers of support to ensure the variety of needs, from full time secondment to part time support through to self-serve, enabling demand to be forecast, assessed, agreed and provided for with defined offerings.
  • Fostering healthy relationships with the PD/PM network, raising the awareness of Arup’s H&S support, and the value it provides to effective project management. 
  • Assisting Arup’s project teams understand and address design and project-related risks through the provision of H&S expertise. This will include the provision of advice, support and guidance to manage the risks arising from new and emerging risks and regulatory requirements, applying H&S best practice and the Principles of Prevention.
  • Providing design health and safety support and risk management services to ensure compliance with duties imposed by CDM Regulations 2015 and the Building Safety Act 2024. This will include supporting Arup with the selection, appointment and training of Principle Designer and Safety by Design Advisors on projects, including the provision of internal training for Designers.
  • Establishing appropriate H&S competency frameworks for projects, identifying, documenting and managing the relevant legal, contractual and appropriate risk-based training and competency requirements. Prepare and, where necessary, deliver general, specialist and technical health and safety training to enable competency.
  • Preparing, implementing, and reviewing H&S processes and deliverables including PCIP, Design Management Plan, H&S Files, Designers risk register, project method statements, risk and assessment and H&S frameworks are prepared to ensure safe systems of work are established and communicated.
  • Leading the investigation of serious incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and appropriate corrective actions that focus on identifying and addressing learning outcomes to prevent re-occurrence.

    Is this role right for you?

    We are looking for a candidate with:

  • Relevant industry experience and technical expertise in Construction, Built Environment and/or Infrastructure development within a business support environment.
  • Expertise in delivery of a broad range of CDM/H&S related advice with substantial design risk experience in construction and infrastructure-related disciplines.
  • Knowledge of ISO 45001, 14001 and 9001, BS 8670 and associated standards and PAS. 
  • Chartered professional, or seeking chartered status (e.g., CMIOSH, CMaPS or chartered engineer).
  • NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety or Health and Safety Management.
