This post is directly employed by the London Borough of Newham, who was the first London borough to offer a fully integrated 0-19 health and social care service after we assumed direct responsibility for providing School Nursing services, Health Visiting and Family Nurse Partnership in 2017. Therefore, our CYPS directorate will be delivering the 0-19 Healthy Child programme through the Childrens Health Service.

We have a stable and permanent management team in the Children’s Health 0-19 Service and are now recruiting to this Safeguarding Advisor role within our Health Safeguarding Team.

The Children's Health 0-19 service had their CQC inspection in 2021 and rated Good in all areas.

The Job

The Safeguarding Children Advisor/ Nurse will be part of a team providing child protection advice, support and training to staff across the Children Health workforce. They will work with the wider Safeguarding workforce to ensure an effective governance framework is in place. The role will include supporting the CYPS Children’s Triage Team.

The post holder will be responsible for providing supervision and training in child protection to staff across the Children’s Health 0-19 Service in order to support their work with vulnerable children.

This role will provide support to members of the team involved in child protection processes through support in attending child protection conferences, strategy meeting and other interagency professional meetings as the need arise.

The post holder will provide advice and expertise regarding child protection to staff across Children’s Health, working in partnership with other Safeguarding leads and other members of the CYPS team, including the Newham Safeguarding Children Partnership, to ensure safety and quality of service delivery. A key responsibility of this post, would be to facilitate staff in developing their knowledge base in safeguarding children, through innovative practice, using supervision models to support high quality delivery of services and effective case management.

About You

The service is seeking a Safeguarding Children Advisor with experience of working in a service with complex population needs and vulnerable families. This role is for someone with in depth knowledge of the 0-19 public health nursing service (Family Nurses, Health Visiting and School Health Teams) and its key priorities. The Safeguarding Children Advisor must have expertise in child protection supervision and training, and have a comprehensive understanding of risk management in relation to case management and care planning. The post holder must be able to work effectively within a multiagency team and provide a high level of safeguarding support to community health staff.

The candidate must be/ have:

  • Post registration/graduate- Specialist Practice Qualification in Health Visiting/School Nursing (SCPHN)
  • NMC Registered – Professional nursing/ midwifery
  • Teaching Certificate or equivalent mentorship training.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as a qualified Health Visitor/School Nurse
  • Experience of Multi- agency/multidisciplinary working
  • Experience of direct supervision of qualified and unqualified staff
  • IT literate . using clinical systems, word processing, email and internet use.
