About the role

We invite UCL academic and research staff to consider applying for the academic leadership role of UCL Pro-Vice-Provost (Doctoral School and Early Career Reseach Staff).

 Please note:

  • This role is available only to UCL academic and research staff colleagues as a four-year (renewable) secondment, with funding provided for backfill of the appointee’s substantive post. Prospective applicants should obtain the agreement of their line manager before applying for this secondment.
  • We welcome joint applications from two candidates with complementary expertise and skills who wish to job-share. We welcome applications from women, and men or women from an ethnic minority, as they are under-represented within UCL at senior levels.

  • Reporting to the Vice-Provost (Research, Innovation & Global Engagement) [RIGE], Professor Geraint Rees, the Pro-Vice-Provost (PVP) will develop, consult upon and refine a vision for the development of the UCL Doctoral School, UCL Academic Careers Office and support for early career research staff. They will consider how the culture, training and environment in which UCL research takes place can support doctoral researchers and early career researcher staff, and provide strategic academic leadership in partnership with other teams for these developments.

    The PVP will review UCL’s approach to functions and processes relevant to the university’s broader research environment, working with the relevant teams and ensuring that these functions and processes are oriented to support this vision.

    The PVP will be a member of the UCL Research, Innovation & Global Engagement (RIGE) Strategic Leadership team.

    About you

    Essential criteria for the role includes the following qualifications, experience and knowledge:
    Academic standing commensurate with professorial status, including an excellent track record of
    postdoctoral academic achievements
    Familiarity with issues and challenges relevant to the research environment as it is supported at UCL and
    elsewhere
    Demonstrable record of outstanding achievement in a senior academic leadership role (for example as a
    head of team or project lead), with the highest standards of intellectual capacity, integrity and professional
    accountability
    Experience of developing and implementing strategic plans in a complex academic environment
    Highly organised and resourceful under pressure, with the ability to define targets and prioritise competing
    demands whilst setting and retaining high standards
    Vision, energy and genuine passion for the UCL mission and values, including our commitment to equality,
    diversity and inclusivity
    Committed to creativity, innovation, experimenting with new approaches and testing new methods, as well
    as to continuous improvement in light of lessons learned
    Extensive experience of successfully leading and managing a cross-functional team, including in changing
    contexts
    Skills and abilities:
    Creative, energetic and enthusiastic, with the ability to work efficiently and collaboratively on numerous
    projects simultaneously with multiple stakeholders
    A confident and persuasive communicator, with outstanding emotional intelligence and relationship-
    building skills – suitable to deliver inclusive and transformative change in the context of a large and
    diverse organisation
    Exceptional interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence,
    persuade and negotiate successfully and positively with staff at different levels of seniority
    Excellent analytical skills, accuracy and attention to detail, including the ability to absorb and analyse
    diverse data to quickly identify key issues through critical scrutiny and to prioritise suitable action
    accordingly
    Evidence of establishing credibility with senior staff and engaging effectively with multiple internal and
    external stakeholders, to understand and shape requirements and deliver solutions that meet
    organisational strategic objectives
