Job overview

The post offered is that of Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adult Psychiatry (10PA), however part-time candidates will be considered, working in the established Barnet Older Adult West Locality Team – Hendon/Edgware division. This is one of four Older Adult CMHTs in BEH Mental Health NHS Trust. The team provides care and treatment to older adults residing within Barnet with functional and organic mental health problems requiring secondary care input. The hours of operation are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

This is an exciting time to join the Trust as there are many opportunities to contribute to the organisations’ development and contribute to service redesign.

The job description is currently being approved by the Royal College.

Main duties of the job

A more detailed job description is attached. There is support for newly appointed consultants in the StartWell group. As part of this the post holder will have the opportunity of having a more senior consultant as a mentor.

Clinical responsibilities of this post will be to provide shared medical leadership to Barnet Older Adults services with other consultants.

To ensure the timely assessment, treatment and follow up of elderly people with psychiatric disorders who require the intervention of our specialist services.

Working for our organisation

Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust is responsible for providing mental health services for people of all ages across the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, as well as providing some specialist services across the whole of North London and beyond. Since January 2011, the Trust also provides adult and children’s community health services in Enfield, following the transfer of Enfield Community Services from NHS Enfield.

Formed in 2001 through the merger of its predecessor organizations, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (BEH-MHT) continues to innovate and develop at a fast pace. We serve a population of 1.2 million and operate from over 20 main sites in the community. In 2020-21 the trust cared for more than 126,176 people; approximately 2,800 patients on our wards and over 128,388 service users in the community.

We provide a wide range of local and more specialist mental health services, including helping people with serious mental illness (SMI), personality disorders, drug and alcohol recovery, children’s mental health issues, dementia, eating disorders, learning disabilities, ADHD and suicide prevention. The Trust has an overall Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating as ‘Good’ from 2019 and retained the ‘good’ rating in 2022. It also runs the North London Forensic Service (NLFS), which the CQC has rated as Outstanding.

To provide clinical and professional leadership in the service.

To provide support to carers and relatives of elderly people with mental disorders.

To facilitate access to a range of community orientated services to those who may need them.

To liaise effectively with other Trust services and external partner agencies in the best interests of patients.

To provide a service of the highest quality, within the limits of our resources.

To promote high quality management of psychiatric patients by non-medical staff. To support non-medical colleagues in working independently.

To take part in management activities related to the post, or the wider service within which it is embedded.

To comply with all legal obligations covering clinical practice e.g. MHA (1983) and MCA (2005).

To commit to ensuring fair access to services for all.

To comply with procedures on reporting concerns about professional conduct or competence of medical or other colleagues

Person specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Full Registration with the General Medical Council UK
  • On the General Medical Council Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining a CCT
  • Training and clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis and management of older (≥65) adults with functional, organic and mental disorders
  • Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and Safeguarding Procedures
  • Excellent clinical skills with experience of Community Psychiatric assessments
  • Section 12 MHA Approved and an Approved Clinician
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists UK or equivalent
  • Additional degree or equivalent
  • Registered for the Continuing Professional Development Programme of the Royal College of Psychiatrists UK
  • Membership of a Medical Defence Organisation
  • Experience in teaching with ability to use a wide range of teaching techniques and audio-visual aids
  • • Clinical supervision skills training
  • • Research Experience
