JOB SUMMARY:

The Birmingham Museum of Art is looking for a Museum Conservator to use professional conservation techniques to maintain art objects. The Museum Conservator prepares museum collections and objects for storage, research, or exhibition. The Museum Conservator also researches art objects to preserve a record and history of various objects. The Museum Conservator is also responsible for leading internal and external conservation workers to include the assignment and review of work performed, and assisting them as it relates to job training and education.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for employment in this position, a candidate possess the following:

Option A:

  • Master's degree in Conservation.


  • Option B:

  • Completion of a certificate/apprenticeship program in conservation from an accredited program (e.g., West Dean program in UK for candidates with education from overseas).

  • Preferred Requirements

    In addition to the above, the candidate will possess:

  • Experience working as an assistant conservator or full conservator as part of an internship or full-time employment.

  • Prior experience specifically with objects conservation (e.g., ceramics, wood, metals, plaster, etc.).

  • Job Duties

    Typical Museum Conservator job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.

  • Acts as a lead worker of peer or support staff by assigning and reviewing work tasks, facilitating training, and providing feedback using policies, procedures, tools, and directives from management in order to ensure tasks are completed in accordance with established requirements.

  • Oversees the conservation and restoration of three-dimensional (3D) art objects (e.g. sculptures, ceramics, accessories, models, installations) by developing and implementing conservation and restoration procedures used to maintain and/or restore the condition of collection/objects within the museum.

  • Acts as a liaison on behalf of the museum by collaborating and communicating with various parties and sharing expertise and knowledge to provide internal and external staff and the general public information related to museum activities.

  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.

  • Prepares requests for proposals and bid specifications for the jurisdiction or department(s) by reviewing current museum needs, projections, and budget information in order to obtain bids from vendors for conservation initiatives.

    The Birmingham Museum of Art offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including:

  • Salary range: $52,686 - $81,744 (starting salary is commensurate with education and experience)

  • Critical Knowledges

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of caring for collection pieces (e.g., proper conditions for installation, storage, packaging, handling, etc.) as well as methods and equipment used (e.g., chemicals, tools, etc.) in conservation, preservation and restoration.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of determining the condition of collection pieces utilizing various equipment (e.g., stereo-binocular microscope, psychrometer, recording hygrothermograph, digital hygrometer, etc.).

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of classifying, cataloging, storing, packaging, and locating items or materials in museum collections.

  • Work Environment

  • Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting.

  • Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.


  • Physical Demands

  • Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods.
