Role: Materials Science EngineerLocation: Huddersfield – Full-Time OnsiteRate: £17-26/Hour Outside IR35Duration and Start: 12 Months (+ Extensions) ; 1St July 2024 (can be sooner)

Brief:I am looking for a materials science engineer (MSE) to join a leading manufacturer of turbochargers within the automotive industry.You will be working in a small team of engineers and technicians. The team will grow over time. You’ll be part of a wider and global team of approximately 80 people. You’ll be leading lab requests and small projects.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Testing and approval ofponents against internal specification requirements, working with laboratory equipment and external suppliers where required
  • Provide feedback to design reviews utilising materials science knowledge and understanding suitability of materials for the applications
  • Failure analysis of test and fieldponents utilising problem solving techniques
  • Supporting R&D projects related to, but not limited to, aluminiumponents and their processing
  • Working with a global team virtually that spans across R&D, Platform, Supplier Quality, and Laboratory Operations and Service Engineering to provide MSE guidance

  • Equipment Used:
  • Metallographic prep
  • Optical microscopy
  • Scanning electron microscopy

  • Essential Requirements:
  • BSc or Msc in Materials Science and Engineering (or relevant discipline)
  • Materials Science and Engineering experience (1-2 years)
  • Applying science to resolve problems in industry.
  • Lab experience, including sample preparation, microscopy, analysis and reporting is required.

  • Ideal requirements:
  • Automotive industry experience
  • Problem solving andponent failure analysis would be beneficial.
  • Worked with aluminium alloys
  • In Depthpetencies:Material characterisation - Interprets mechanical, chemical, microstructural and physical properties using laboratory equipment to confirmpliance to print, and correlates these properties with field orponent test results to determine robustness; defines appropriate material characterisation schedule using correct laboratory equipment to ensure requirements are met. - Analyses specimen physical and chemical properties using applicable laboratory equipment to identify failure mode and mechanism; evaluates design intent, manufacturing, processing in accordance with established processes and operational history, print requirements, part function and failure mode to determine root cause(s); rmends corrective actions considering material limitations and manufacturing constraints to protect the customer and prevent reoccurrence.Evaluatesponent requirements regarding form and function in order to identify base material and processing options; selects manufacturing route and selects material and process based on best-fit option(s) aligned to requirements; validates selected material and process by defining necessary test plan to prove capability to requirements.Technical documentation and knowledge transfer - Documents information based on knowledge gained as part of technical function activities;municates to stakeholders with the goal of enabling improved technical productivity and effective knowledge transfer to others who were not originally part of the initial learning.
