Arup’s land quality team form part of the Climate and Sustainability Services (CSS) business, which comprises teams covering a range of environmental specialisms. The land quality team coordinate, manage and produce contaminated land assessments, working with a variety of technical disciplines on a wide range of different types of development. The team have expertise in the assessment of ground contamination, material and waste management, environmental permitting, due diligence and water quality.

The Opportunity

In this role you’ll be working closely with other Arup teams (e.g. other environmental specialists, planners, geotechnical and building engineers and infrastructure civil engineers) to deliver integrated multi-disciplinary consultancy services to a wide range of different clients. There will be opportunities to support other environmental teams, such as EIA, air quality, archaeology and ecology, through which you can develop broader environmental knowledge.

The main aspect of the role will be working on a wide variety of projects (in terms of scale, value, location and sector) assessing the contamination status and formulating cost-effective and pragmatic remediation solutions, liaising with regulators and satisfying planning needs. In this role, you’ll be largely office based, with some site work, for example, to supervise ground investigations and remediation projects. From time to time site work may be more intensive. There may be opportunities to work on short-term projects around the UK and even internationally.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for people who:

  • Are qualified in environmental science, chemistry, contaminated land, geological or hydrogeological or other related field, along with a postgraduate degree in a relevant subject
  • Have previous contaminated land experience gained within a consulting environment
  • Are working towards full membership of a relevant institution (CIWEM, IEMA, IES, Geological Society, RSC or equivalent) and considering chartership in the future.
  • Have some experience of soil and waste management, waste classification, DQRA, hydrogeological assessment, due diligence and environmental permitting would be of benefit
