Nursery: Bright Horizons Teddies Loughton Day Nursery and Preschool

Salary: Starting from £25,222.70 per annum (full time equivalent, dependant on qualification/s and experience)

Contract: Fixed Term from September 2024

Hours: Part Time Employment: Wednesdays and Fridays 8am-6pm (with possible increase to 3 days a week)

Location: Loughton, Essex, IG10

We are looking for a part time, passionate Early Years Assistant and experienced British Sign Language (BSL) Support Worker to provide 1:1 support to a profoundly deaf 3-year-old child at our Teddies Loughton Nursery.

The child has bilateral cochlear implants and is using a total communication approach i.e. Sign Language and Spoken Language both at home and in nursery. The child has no other learning difficulties to be accommodated and BSL is their main method of communication.


We're conveniently located under a mile from Debden town centre and Debden underground station, and just over a mile from Loughton town centre. Our Nursery in Loughton is set on the grounds of Debden Park High School and we are rated 'Good' by Ofsted.

    What you’ll be doing

    The successful candidate will be joining a committed and enthusiastic nursery team who are developing their experience and skills working with deaf children. Your role will be to support the young deaf child in a 1:1 relationship, to develop their communication skills, both in sign and spoken language, alongside the Nursery Staff, Teachers of the Deaf and Speech and Language Professionals who are directly involved with the child’s care.

    You will also closely supervise the child when engaging in play activities (indoor and outdoor) to ensure she is aware of potential dangers and understands what should/should not be done in a certain situation.

  • Working as part of a nursey team looking after babies and children up to the age of 5.

  • Having daily adventures with our children through interactive play, activities, reading and helping them with their curious minds through the learning curriculum

  • Communicating with parents daily on their child’s activities 

  • Provide a caring and supporting environment where the children feel safe and looked after

  • Supporting colleagues encourage the children’s development towards key milestones

  • Promote and ensure child welfare, protection, health and safety and safeguarding

  • What we’re looking for

  • Signature Level 2 Qualification (or above) in British Sign Language

  • Signature Level 2 Certificate in Communication Support Work for Deaf Learners (or equivalent) or experience in a similar role.

  • Previous experience working with children ideal but not essential - Nursery Bank Staff, Nursery Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Nursery Practitioner, Early Years Educator, Nanny, Childminder or similar.

  • Passion for making learning fun and engaging for each child

  • Ability to build trust and strong working relationships with both colleagues and parents

  • Ability to use a variety of communication techniques with both children and adults

  • Sound understanding of child protection and the safeguarding of children
