Your new role
The Director of Underwriting Performance is one of two newly created senior roles within QBE's global underwriting performance team. Focused either on short tail or long tail insurance - and located in either Sydney or London - in this role you will oversee the business performance of the [LT/ST] underwriting account for the QBE Group.
Reporting to QBE's Group Head of Performance, this opportunity involves supporting the development and review of underwriting strategies and business plans, ensuring they are validated and enhanced effectively. As Director of Underwriting Performance you will analyse underwriting performance, optimizing profit contributions through regular reviews, and monitoring technical trends.
Additionally, you will represent the QBE Group Underwriting Office at various forums and participate in global initiatives to drive operating excellence and enhance interdivisional cooperation. Finally, you will act as a trusted advisor; developing and supporting the organization with an integrated business plan and performance tracking and fostering effective partnerships with business and functional leaders.
Other key accountabilities include:Implement strategic initiatives to optimize business performance, ensure profitable growth, and align underwriting practices with business objectives and market trends.
Perform in-depth analyses of performance cells to identify improvement areas, and oversee the management of critical accumulations to mitigate risks and enhance profitability for QBE's global insurance products.
Leadprehensive analysis and derive insights to drive business performance and ensure profitable growth through advanced analytical techniques.
Provide support for Board and GEC documents related to underwriting performance, lead strategic projects, collaborate with key members, and deputize for the Group Head of Underwriting Strategy and Performance when needed.
Deliver technical expertise in underwriting analysis and performance reviews, implementing best practices and innovative methodologies for accuracy and efficiency.
Assist with the development and implementation of strategic priorities, including planning key projects, supporting executive operating rhythms, and ensuring the delivery of KPIs and objectives across the Group CUO function.
Participate in regular performance reviews, closely engaging with DCUO, group finance, and actuarial functions to align underwriting performance with financial and actuarial insights.
Network externally and internally with QBE teams worldwide to ensure consistency in processes and the adoption of best practices.
Lead by example, fostering a culture of engagement, accountability, and professional excellence, while supporting the motivation, development, and strategic priorities of underwriting teams to ensure high performance and alignment with organizational goals.
About you
This is an opportunity for a seasoned underwriting or actuarial leader with extensive experience in performance analysis and oversight within the insurance industry. You will have managed insurance portfolios at scale, and be able to leverage your understanding of insurance products to provide credible support and challenge to an executive stakeholder group, effectively navigating multiple national boundaries and regulatory regimes.
Other key skills and experiences include:Ability to clearlymunicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
Passion for leading and managing teams of senior professionals within a large-scale business environment.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategic business planning and development, aligning initiatives with organizational strategy.
Strong skills in negotiation, persuasion, and stakeholder influence to drive collaboration and achieve objectives.
Advanced analytical and statistical skills, preferably in Actuarial, Underwriting, or Finance, with a focus on creative problem-solving.
Exceptional relationship building skillset to navigate a global insurer.
