Your new role

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • As part of a team, carry out the structural analysis and design of building structures and foundations in diverse sectors and scale.
  • Collaborate with the team to see that collectively our designs are technically accurate, efficient in form and materials to reduce embodied carbon to a minimum.
  • Practise innovative design, always striving to find the best outcomes for our clients.
  • Keep up to date with your technical skills through training provided by Ramboll and through self-learning, as expected of a chartered / near chartered Engineer.
  • Delight our existing clients and collaborators through enthusiastic ‘can do’ attitude in all our engagements at all project stages.
  • Communicating designs to team members & construction sites
  • Taking an active role in technical groups and team meetings to support continuous improvement.
  • You will join our Building Structures department

    As our new Design Structural Engineer, you will be part of our Birmingham office which has doubled in number to approximately 130 in three years. Our buildings team includes structural, civil, building services, Facades and Acoustics, working alongside colleagues in Environmental and Health and Infrastructure, collaboratively sharing skills and services that deliver a one-stop engineering design service to our clients.

    Our Civil & Structural team is approximately 30 strong and growing. We are delivering exciting landmark local and national projects. We work in all market sectors including Sci-Tech and Hi-tech industrial, commercial, schools and higher education, sports and arenas, residential, commercial and the creative arts. Our delivery is streamlined through effective processes so that you have space to explore. You will have the best tools and encouraged to promote digital innovation, to be multi-disciplined in your approach and be creative. Sustainable design is at the heart of our values. You will explore with our clients how sustainable design adds value to their business.     These include:

  • Working towards Chartership with the IStructE, ICE or international equivalent.
  • Ability to design reinforced concrete, steel and/or timber.
  • Experience of/interest in digital and parametric design.
  • Experience of structural analysis tools (Autodesk Robot and Tekla Structures).
  • Knowledge of assessment, retrofit and alteration of existing structures.
  • Skilled in technical report writing.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex engineering principles in plain language, verbally, in writing and through sketching.
  • A passion for sustainable solutions.
  • A multidisciplinary mindset and an aptitude for learning about the wider aspects of building design.
  • Personal qualities that will help you succeed in this role include:

  • Happy to ask questions and to answer them!
  • You will be Chartered Structural Engineer with at least 8years experience.
  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent in structural / civil engineering.
  • Relevant experience and insight in a variety of sectors such as schools, higher education, residential, commercial, or industrial development.
  • Experience of delivering accurate and innovative structural designs using a host of analysis, design and modelling tools. A good team player, able to work collaboratively within large teams on large projects, and comfortable to work independently on smaller projects, under supervision, but with wide ranging responsibilities for all aspects of design.
  • An ability to design conceptually, with an appreciation of multi-discipline coordination and known for delighting architects through capture and development of their ideas.
  • Be an effective communicator, both written, and verbally and through digital media.
  • Be familiar with techniques for planning resources and able to perform within agreed commercial targets.
