Job overview
The post holder will support the Ward Manager in promoting a positive attitude towards excellent patient care, working in partnership with parents and carers. You will act as a mentor/preceptor and facilitate junior staff’s development through teaching and support. You will be required to assist in managing the ward within its allocated resources and to act as a professional role model, ensuring patient safety while maintaining a high standard of clinical care.
Main duties of the job
- To participate as an effective member of the MDT and be responsible for the development and implementation of a patient centred approach to care.
- To ensure that statutory and legal requirements of care are incorporated safely.
- To observe the requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983 ensuring the patient is fully informed of their legal position.
- To interpret the significance of clinical observations, act upon them; and communicate information to other multi-disciplinary team members after making the necessary clinical judgements and in line with clinical protocols.
- To determine nursing priorities and plan patient care accordingly including full risk assessment, inform the Ward manager when changes in circumstances may affect standards of care.
- To meet the physical, psychological, social and cultural needs of the individual and their family, using research-based knowledge and skills to maintain the individual’s identity.
- To recognise the needs of the family/carers.
- To ensure that measurable high standards of nursing care are maintained and participate in the setting and review of standards and nursing audits and in supporting staff in delivering and achieving high standards of nursing care.
- To supervise junior staff and students on placement and ensure placement and learning objectives are met.
- To carry out duties of the “named nurse” in co-ordinating care of specified service users.
- Emergency and Site Co-ordination duties on a rota basis after training
