Location – UK Wide (London, Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburg, Belfast)

Pay Band – 8

Salary – up to £46,203 plus £3,300 London allowance if based in London.

Contract length - 1 year fixed term contract

The Team:

The role sits as part of the Marketing Operations team, focusing on implementing the Marketing Automation platform and will be a core member of a cross-functional project team.

The role will work closely with Data Evidence and Performance (DEP) team which is part of the Chief Operating Officer function which includes the central oversight and leadership for corporate planning, performance management, evaluation and reporting, the management of strategic risk and of investment, internal audit, shared services, marketing, digital and technology.

DEP provides the central leadership and development for the British Council’s Data Analytics and Evidence Strategy working across the organisation with stakeholders to leverage our Data and Evidence assets.

This includes driving better data quality through enterprise data governance, designing, and delivering data technology and insight solutions, co-ordinating an organisational community of practice for Data Analytics and Evidence, development of the British Council KPIs framework, monitoring and reviewing performance to drive improvement, evaluation and measurement of impact to help improve decision making.

The Role:

The Data Manager will be part of the Marketing Automation Joint Project Team, working closely with the Data Management team to establish the data model and data flows, consolidating the various processes and platforms across the business, creating guidance on best practice use of the system to deliver data integrity.

The role will create data hierarchies, KPI definitions as well as exploring the automation of processes and data flows to improve efficiencies and access to data. The role will have responsibility for building capacity and maintaining networks in Countries and Regions and overseeing the provision of training to colleagues. The team works closely with business units across the organisation to support business and strategic solutions for delivering data management practices.

Main Accountabilities:

Consultancy, Analysis and Problem Solving
(Data Management)

  • Management and quality assurance of accurate data for the marketing automation project.
  • Develop and maintain KPI definitions ensuring these are up to date and in line with strategic and business needs.
  • Development of data standards including operational data models, business rules and operational definitions tailored to enable consistent global business use.
  • Management of processes to standardise, prepare for linkage, and more broadly exploit key strategic data.
  • Make sure that data collection procedures are in line with all relevant rules and guidelines.
  • Establish global data standards upon which collection of data are based/measured and ensure that these standards adhered to
  • Create and enforce policies for effective data management.
  • Formulate techniques for quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy, and legitimacy of data.
  • Establish rules and procedures for data sharing within internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ensure that data collection software is functioning as expected and resolving issues as they arise.
  • Monitor and analyse information and data systems and evaluate their performance to discover ways of enhancing data collection methods and to simplify and automate data collection.
  • Ensure digital databases and archives are protected from security breaches and data losses.
  • Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build a global network to improve data collection. Provide training to employees to be able to perform data collection independently and effectively.
  • Interpret and explain complex data to employees to carry everybody along and for purposes of clarity/verification.
  • Develop and maintain strong operational and strategic relationships across the organisation with SBUs, Professional Services and Regions
  • Minimum Essential:

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Power BI to prepare and analyse large datasets.
  • Proven ability in translating complex data specifications into usable datasets across all types of non-financial and financial data.
  • Leadership in building quality processes to monitor data quality standards.
  • Significant experience in working with raw data and skilled in managing, interpreting, and evaluating activities using qualitative and quantitate data.
  • Knowledge and experience of quantitative analysis and methodologies
  • Experience of maintaining stakeholder networks to implement new processes.
  • Experience of leadership in developing data models, taxonomies, and data standards
  • Desirable

  • Expertise in at least one programming language to build data models and queries for reporting i.e. Python, SQL, R.
  • Role specific skills

  • Familiarity with statistical techniques and their application in a business environment
