CCOT deliver a 24/7 service across both our Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe General Hospitals.

Main duties of the job

The key components of the role are:

  • To avert admissions by identifying patients who are deteriorating and either helping to prevent admission or ensuring admission to a critical care bed happens in a timely manner
  • To enable discharges by supporting the continuing recovery of discharged critical care patients and their significant others.
  • To share critical care skills with staff in wards, ensuring enhancement of training opportunities and skills practice and to use information gathered from the ward and community to improve critical care services for patients and relatives.

    Education, Qualifications and Training

    Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse (Level 1)/ AHP/ODP
  • Recognised mentorship/teaching and assessing course
  • First degree in relevant professional studies desirable
  • Evidence of further continued professional development
  • Post qualification Critical Care Course or equivalent experience
  • Desirable criteria

  • Masters level education or working towards
  • Accredited Leadership/Management Course
  • ALS provider
  • Recognised history taking and physical assessment course or willingness to undertake
  • Non-medical prescribing course or willingness to undertake
  • Experience

    Essential criteria

  • Recent extensive experience as a Band 6 in ICU or equivalent Critical Care/Acute area
  • Previous experience as shift/team leader
  • Experience of teaching/mentoring/ coaching of the multi-professional team
  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience of performing outreach role
  • Experience of involvement in Quality Improvement/ successful change management
  • Skills, Knowlege and Abilities

    Essential criteria

  • Excellent personal and communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Knowledge of current developments in nursing practice and critical care outreach
  • Managerial, leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates ability to think laterally, creatively and innovatively to enhance patient care
  • Highly motivated and ability to motivate others and Able to facilitate and support learning in practice
  • Excellent IT skills, able to work with a range of software i.e. Microsoft office, Excel, Word etc
  • Good facilitation/presentation, teaching and assessing skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team, displaying excellent team working
  • SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

    Essential criteria

  • Ability to work required shift pattern and special circumstances
  • Desirable criteria

  • Ability to travel to other sites
  • PPE requirements:  Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust requires all colleagues to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with our infection prevention and control procedures.
