This is an exciting opportunity to join the Paediatric Psychological Therapies Service at St George's Hospital in a permanent consultant role. This team is a large, multidisciplinary service providing specialist paediatric psychology and neuropsychology to children and young people across the hospital.The successful post-holder will act as deputy head of service, working closely with the head of service and other senior members of the team to lead the effective provision of services to children with medical conditions.For discussion, please contact Dr Zoe Berger , Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Head of Paediatric Psychological Services. This post combines consultant clinical and specialist managerial lead responsibilities. The clinical responsibilities and sessions will be agreed with the postholder on appointment but are envisaged to be about 40% of the role.

Lead responsibilities are as follows:To provide leadership of the paediatric psychological therapies service and deputise for Head of Service as requiredTo work with the other Trust Psychology Leads and the Head of Psychological Services on professional, clinical and managerial issues to ensure effective functioning of the psychological provision across the Trust.To work with senior members of the directorate to ensure high quality provision of services across the children's directorateThe post holder will be expected to have specialist clinical expertise including knowledge and experience of clinical psychology in a paediatric setting, neurodevelopmental psychology and cognitive assessment. Experience of managing clinical psychology provision in a paediatric setting is an advantage.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum 2:1 honours degree in psychology
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS
  • Registered with the HCPC as practitioner psychologist
  • Eligibility for chartered status for the BPS and membership of Division of Clinical Psychology is optional
  • Formal training in the supervision or line management of others


Desirable

  • Postdoctoral training in psychological therapeutic approaches with specific relevance to paediatric psychology or in the field of neurodevelopmental psychology


Knowledge

Essential

  • Substantial experience (minimum of 5 years) of working as a qualified clinical psychologist (or equivalent qualification)
  • Experience of working as a qualified practitioner psychologist in a paediatric setting
  • The ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan
  • Experience of developing and leading a service
  • Doctoral level or post-qualification knowledge of systemic and organisational working within a health care setting.
  • Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the patient population and mental health.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology


Desirable

  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.


Skills

Essential

  • Must be able to provide effective clinical leadership and to demonstrate leadership and managerial skills
  • Must be able to plan for delivery of a specialist service both short/medium and long term
  • Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours
  • Able to provide and receive highly complex sensitive or contentious information in the context of significant barriers to acceptance, hostility, antagonism or highly emotive atmosphere.
  • Communicating at times highly complex condition related information to patients.
  • A high level ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS.
  • Skilled in providing consultation and training to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Ability to contain and work with organisational stress and ability to 'hold' the stress of others.
  • Ability to identify and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice
  • Ability to articulate and interpret clearly the role of the profession based upon a good understanding of the framework of government and national professional policy.

  • Record of having published in either peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books.
  • Ability to develop and use complex multi-media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings.
