About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF KUDZY'S TRAVELS

Environmental Health at Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where passionate and expert professionals go above and beyond for their colleagues every day.

Kudzy knows the streets of Westminster like the back of her hand. Her office can be anywhere. Market stalls, spas, carnivals, hotels, even backstage at an Adele concert. She’s travelled more than most have in a lifetime without leaving Westminster. She’s an Environmental Health Officer like no other. But, for her, seeing the difference her work makes to communities is the real highlight. For some, it’s financial lifelines, for others it’s the open sign on the restaurant they’ve always dreamed of. For Kudzy, it’s the smiles on her customers’ faces.

The Role:

As an Apprentice Environmental Health Officer, you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s communities – all while getting your career off to an exceptional start!

Earning while you learn, this is a fantastic way to embark on a deeply interesting career while you study for a BSc in Environmental Health at Middlesex University. As a member of our Public Protection and Licensing division, you will help us deliver a clean, safe and peaceful city that is suitable for our local residents, businesses and visitors to the area.

Over a period of four years, you will therefore combine hands-on work experience with a variety of modules taught at the university, before being given the chance to become a registered Environmental Health Practitioner. With a wealth of areas to explore, this is a unique opportunity to discover all facets of Environmental Health. Our department is split into a number of teams covering food & health and safety, private sector housing, noise, environmental sciences and public health, plus we have a consultation team, so there will be a huge array of projects to get involved in – and a great array of areas to explore your personal passions!

Whether attending meetings with multidisciplinary experts, carrying out site inspections, supporting enforcement actions or engaging with residents to gather evidence and understand their needs, you can be certain of developing not only your environmental health knowledge, but also your professional skills. In short, no two days will ever be the same in this truly exciting role – so if you are looking for a great challenge, you will excel in our supportive team!

About You:

This is a varied role that would be well-suited to a dynamic and friendly individual who is keen to learn and be an asset to the team from day one. We are therefore looking for someone who is literate and numerate and has Grade 4/C or above GCSEs in English and maths, plus 96 UCAS points. Of these, at least one subject will be science or technology-based – though alternative learning experiences may also be suitable if you can bring the right mindset and approach to our team!

Crucially, you will have some understanding of how environmental health can improve public health, and you will be keen to help the team come up with innovative solutions to complex cases, so investigative and assessment skills are important. Great organisation and communication capabilities will be essential to your success, and you will be IT literate with the ability to use and interpret databases.
